My tiny apartment's bursting with fragrant red roses, on every surface of the room, a blanket of rose petals enveloping my white comforter. Another round of heaving sobs breaks loose as I touch each bouquet and arrangement, overwhelmed by Storm's magnanimous gesture, a message on the bathroom mirror written in red lipstick, I love you, baby. I'm sorry.

Thank God I chose not to invite Damon up; he wanted to see for himself the space was empty before leaving me alone. A knock on the door startles me, the peephole revealing Jenny next door.

"What's that amazing smell?" she asks, gasping as my door opens wide to reveal the flowers.

"Woah, your boyfriend must have screwed up big-time!"

"Do you want a few bouquets?" I ask, handing her two glass vases from the kitchen countertop.

"Thanks! I was wondering where you've been the last few days. Does he have a brother?"

"I'm super tired, enjoy," I deflect, fastening both locks and tightening my fingers into fists.

I drop on the bed's edge with my head resting in my shaking hands as emotions run unchecked. Storm's invasive gesture riles my anger in another round of bullshit apology. He's truly insane, thinking a few damn flowers will smooth the turbulent waters between us, my feet stepping to the bathroom and smearing the half-ass sorry across the mirror's length.

"Argh!" I groan, unable to take two steps without his energy close.

The small kitchen trash can picks up, and I throw every fragrant bouquet into the container, stomping them down as it overfills, my foot bearing the brunt of the outburst as small cuts from the stems appear on my sandaled foot. He's hurting me despite his absence, my hands resting on the small plastic countertop, reigning in my chaotic breath.

The trash bag pulls tight, and I reach for my phone, dialing the landlord and leaving a voice mail to change the locks, agreeing to pay the hundred-dollar fee mentioned in my rental agreement. Taking small steps to distance myself from Storm's the only way I can move forward, deciding to get Jess's opinion on the restraining order. However, my mind had been made up not to press charges or take legal action for the sake of my career.

I flop on top of the petals, watching them scatter, like the love Storm and I once shared. Having a moment alone listening to the passing train calms my chest, the next step of my journey unclear. Missing Damon's drawing a small sigh, though it feels good not to have a man commanding my every move.

If I want to make a clean break from this nightmare, I could consider returning to my hometown of Cooper, Illinois. The benefits of distancing myself would come with a steep price, losing those to whom I've grown most close. I love my job at George's law firm and still feel obligated to him for handling my parents' estate and mentoring me fresh out of college.

Depending on where Jess lands a job, I could potentially live with her, certain any major city where she ends up has law firms and paralegal needs.
